Marianne Brandt ranks among the most important artists of the Bauhaus movement. In contrast to the work of her peers, her designs were the only ones (other than the Bauhaus wallpaper) to be commercially successful at that time as well.
After her time as a student in Weimar, she led the metal workshop of the Bauhaus in Dessau from 1928 to 1932. The origins of this ashtray design can be traced to the beginning of her college time in Weimar (1924). Her tendency to reduce to simple functionality is easily recognizable here.
