The Hungarian Marcel Breuer belongs to the most important designers of the Bauhaus movement. Starting in 1925, he directed the Bauhaus workshop and began his experiments with tubular steel. What resulted was, in addition to the famous B3 lounge chair (Wassily), the Laccio side tables. After the endg of the Bauhaus, Breuer emigrated via Switzerland to the United Kingdom and finally to the U.S., where he became an important architect. Interest in his early designs, however, slackened. The lounge chair wasn’t produced again until the 60’s under the name of Wassily (after the artist Wassily Kandinsky), this time by the company Gavina, which where taken over by Knoll. Every chair bears the Marcel-Breuer logotype on the frame and has an individual production number.
The standard version of the Wassily lounge chair is made of chrome-plated circular tube steel with cow leather (variations with Spinneybeck-leather or cowhide on request)
