In 1924, Marianne Brand designed this ashtray as a student in a Bauhaus metal workshop. Initially, even Marianne Brandt didn’t have it easy as a woman in the male-dominated world of the Bauhaus. She was given quite inane tasks. Only once she received the support of the head Laszlo Moholy-Nogy, did she get the recognition she deserved. Nonetheless, her works rank among the best and bring high prices on the collector’s market. Her designs were among the few that were mass-produced in the 20’s and 30’s as well (mostly by the Kandam and Ruppel companies) and were commercially successful. As opposed to many other Bauhaus artists, Marianne Brandt remained in Germany during the war and was later active in the DDR. The ashtray is available at Markanto in two different versions.
