Ludwig Mies van der Rohe saw himself first and foremost as an architect. His furniture designs were primarily used in his buildings and were only produced in very limited quantities in the pre-war years. In 1929, at the world exhibit in Barcelona, he was given the assignment by the Weimar government to design a representative pavilion. With this pavilion, Mies van der Rohe wrote architectural history. For the first time, modern architecture was presented in truly great dimensions.

With the interior design, he wrote design history as well: His Barcelona Chair, influenced by Schinkel’s scissor chair, is a timeless furniture classic. The Barcelona Chair was manufactured in limited quantities at the time, and the production, which was quite involved, was carried out by two German companies. After Mies van der Rohe’s immigration to the U.S., the chair almost fell into oblivion. However, under the influence of Florence Knoll (who was studying under Mies van der Rohe), it was decided that the chair would be reissued by Knoll. As opposed to earlier manufacturers, Knoll replaced the chrome-plated strip steel with polished stainless steel.
