In 1929, Josef Hoffmann created his famous Service Form 15, also known under the name “Melons Service,” for the Viennese manufacturer Augarten. The Viennese architect and artisan was, along with Gustav Klimt and Josef Olbrich, a cofounder of the “Viennese Secession” and the Viennese Studios. This group helped shape the international understanding of design at the beginning of the 20th century; the Art Deco of the 20’s and 30’s is hardly imaginable without them. The melons service, in its methodically shaped form, is representative of the work of the Secession artists.
