The Finn Alvar Aalto is considered one of the most important designers of the 20th century. Influenced by the German Bauhaus movement, he experimented with this material from 1927 on and together with his wife Aino Aalto created countless design classics. In addition to his work with plywood for Artek, his glass work for Iittala, above all, caused an international stir – introduced for the first time in 1936 at the world exhibition in Paris. The original name of the vase is, incidentally, “Lederhosen of an Eskimo Woman” – only later was the vase named after the restaurant of the same name in Helsinki.
