George Nakashima’s great passion was woodworking (he referred to himself as a “woodworker”). His furniture designs, mostly created in his own workshop, are sold today for astronomical prices in auction houses worldwide. Shortly after World War II, Nakashima designed his extensive collection of furniture for Knoll International, including in 1948, the Coffee Table N 10 (or Splay-Leg table).

Nakashima’s early designs have some Japanese influence as you may notice in the case of this table (Nakashima was American with Japanese heritage). After his work for Knoll International, Nakashima designed later a collection for Widdikomb and later he was only creating furniture in his own workshop. Today his work is being continued by his daughter, Mira Nakashima.

Construction: American walnut and hickory, with Knoll Logo and Nakashima signature on underside.
