The metal artist Harry Bertoia was a professor at the legendary Cranbrook Academy, where by the end of the 30’s he had befriended Florence Knoll. In the 40’s, together with Charles and Ray Eames, he laid the foundation for modern American design. Without any budget or time limitations imposed on him by Florence and Hans Knoll, Bertoia was able to realize his ideas — and so were born his sculpture — like wire mesh chairs.
