by Florence Knoll
As the adopted daughter of Eliel Saarinen, the director of the legendary Cranbrook Academy, Florence Knoll came into close contact with other designers such as Eero Saarinen, Charles Eames and Harry Bertoia. She also studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and worked in the offices of Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. After her marriage to Hans Knoll in 1946, Shu (her nickname) took over the planning unit of Knoll and set designer standards – her own functional, straight-lined designs were characteristic of the International Style as well. The bench in square steel from 1954 is available in two lengths.
