Antonio Gaudi was born in 1852 and was certainly the most well known and influential architect of Spain. His constructions and extraordinary architectural works were worldwide sensations. His holistic approach to architecture prompted Gaudi to concern himself with the furniture and decorative elements of his buildings. Today, some of Gaudi’s designs, which had almost been forgotten, are being manufactured again in the same materials and richness of detail as was conceived in the originals. For the Casa Calvet in Barcelona, which was awarded Barcelona’s best building of the 19th century, Gaudi designed the furniture series of the same name consisting of an armchair, chair, stool, bench and mirror. The Calvet Chair is not only an Art Nouveau chair, but due to its sculptural nature, is still considered modern today (other furniture of the Calvet series available on request).
